Apex Systems is looking for a Telescopic Instrumentation Software Developer to join our team in helping to support the United States Naval Observatory (USNO). Being one of the oldest scientific agencies in the United States its primary mission is to produce Positioning, Navigation and Timing for the United States Navy and the United States Department of Defense.
Description of Products/Services
  • The contractor shall maintain existing software systems for telescope and instrument control and command, and data collection consistent with USNO standards, policies and practices.
  • The contractor shall be able to write device drivers to interface Linux and Microsoft Windows computers to astronomical telescopes and instrumentation, and to document any created software in accordance with RMF development and accreditation rules and USNO policies and practices.
  • The contractor shall use source control systems to organize and control revisions to USNO software
  • The contractor shall consult with the astronomers on staff at USNO to improve the efficiency and ease of use of the device drivers
  • The contractor shall be able write monthly reports to the designated USNO point of contact

Contractor Qualifications
  • Experience in the development of customized software to process data from custom and COTS instrumentation.
  • Experience in modern programing languages such as C, C++, or Python.
  • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.

Nice to Haves
  • Experience in the development and use of telescopes and astronomical instrumentation.
  • Experience with source control systems (e.g. GIT, SVN).
  • Experience with development of/coding in Galil motion control language is desirable.
