Position Overview

Performs or leads programming efforts for application software and ensures successful implementation of application enhancements, conversions and system installations. Designs, develops, tests, implements, documents, and supports new and existing software applications.

 

Essential Functions

  • Designs the most efficient and cost effective solution through research and evaluation of options. Works with analysts to ensure documentation of customer requirements for assigned projects and initiatives is completed.
  • Develops solutions by designing technical specifications and standards. Develops an understanding of requirements and makes recommendations for changes based on understanding of business needs and available technology.
  • Performs functional tests to ensure applications meet requirements, and fixes errors where they occur.
  • Documents technical design, application functionality and project playbook(s). Additionally performs technical design and code reviews.

 

Education and Training

 Bachelor's Degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or comparable education and/or experience.

 

Knowledge and Experience

Requires 2 years' experience and/or training designing and implementing mainframe technical solutions in a financial or insurance setting. Requires 2 years' supporting and developing non-terminal based CICS transactions using COBOL, MQ, and CICS Channels and Containers. Prefer 2 years system design experience utilizing the project life cycle methodology and phased approach. Requires experience and proficiency with and ability to learn mainframe skills, languages and concepts within the IBM z/OS environment including, COBOL, CICS, Easytrieve, ISPF, VSAM, change control processes and tools and IBM Utilities. Experience with the following activities:

(a) Requirements gathering, (b) Use Case generation and documentation, (c) Design of complex solutions using multiple architectures, (d) Generation and documentation of both Functional and Technical Design documents.

 

Skill Competencies

Ability to grasp business processes, technologies, applications and concepts quickly and apply them as required. Proven desire to remain current with the latest industry best practices and programming competencies. Proven experience in participating in multiple projects and ability to work with limited supervision. Ability to work in a team environment and meet deadlines. Exposure to and an understanding of the overall Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) approach, including business process automation, shared object model, system adapters, and publish/subscribe architecture. Demonstrates the vital importance of understanding and maintaining complex system of record data models and data integrity.  Excellent interpersonal, presentation, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.

 

Physical Requirements

SEDENTARY WORK: Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Walking & standing are required only occasionally. Close visual acuity to perform activities like analyzing data, typing, writing, viewing a computer, reading, inspecting small parts or assembling.

 

Working Conditions

Generally works in an office environment but may occasionally be required to perform job duties outside of the typical office setting. May provide assistance and tasks at other locations or branches on an as needed basis. Evening and/or weekend shifts may be required.
