Database Engineer 

Job Summary

The Database Engineer 5 plans and conducts assignments, generally involving the larger and more important projects or more than one project. A Database Engineer is fully responsible for the systems and infrastructure which support a product. The person in this role directs and guides the design in a way that ensures compliance with technical and architectural standards. They understand and communicate the non-functional requirements which are necessary for successful product operation. Additionally, they ensure the implementation and transition into production happens smoothly. While the solution runs in production this person is responsible to resolve any problems or issues that are escalated to them. They engage vendors in the resolution of incidents as necessary, and once an incident is resolved they are responsible to ensure all defects in the system or process are identified, tracked, and resolved. This person ensures that all proposed changes have been adequately planned and reviewed eliminating the possibility of unplanned service outages. The person in this role mentors all other engineers in their portfolio. They are a leader.


  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent professional experience.
  • 8+ years relevant professional experience. 
  • 6+ years of experience supporting product development activities and be capable of guiding technology decisions.
  • Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge in field of specialization to the completion of significant assignments. 
  • Provensuccessful leadership skills  
  • Exceptional communicator; both written and verbal
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and train her or his peers
  • Strong understanding of the business processes being supported by the solution
  • Outstanding troubleshooter, with the ability to think under pressure and drive the hardest problems to resolution
  • Expert SQL skills
  • Strong background using SQL Server and Oracle Databases
  • Proficiency with ETL tools & methodologies
  • Proficiency with relational data modeling
  • Some experience with No SQL databases and XQuery a plus\



  • Creating the structure that contains the data
  • Analyzing and protecting the data, including troubleshooting, backups, security processes/configuration
  • Designing and developing both data services and data integrations
  • Following engineering best practices
  • Analyzing database systems problems and provide problem resolution
  • Participate in Problem Management process
  • Maintain production documentation
  • Comply with policy, standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Gather and document requirements for database development.
  • Model databases using industry best practices.
  • Troubleshoot and tune database queries.
  • Interact with developers as a technical database resource to troubleshoot problems with the delivered solutions.
  • Make and restore from database backups.
  • Use ETL tools to move existing Oracle Databases to SQL Server
  • Design and create a semantic layer to support end-user self-service.
  • Quickly and accurately respond to Ad-Hoc information requests.
  • Work with all levels of end users, including executive staff.
