Title: Systems Engineer V

Purpose:

  • This position will serve as an expert in IBM i, operating systems, infrastructure and IBM SAN based technologies.  This position will work both independently and interdependently on a variety of complex projects and support tasks. This role’s primary responsibility is to focus on system performance related to SQL and databases on the IBM i partitions and environments. This position will also interact with development groups, end users, business partners, and all relevant parties involved in this environment.

Position Details-Tasks and operating rhythm:

Daily Responsibilities:

Involved in all aspects of maintaining, modernizing and enhancing existing database applications that are based on DDS, high level language record level access and other non-SQL interfaces

  • Monitor database activity via the Database Plan Cache and Index Advisor and make sound recommendations for improvements on a daily, weekly and monthly basis
  • Manage the IBM i SQL and Data Access methods, including ODBC and JDBC connections with SQL and non-SQL data access. 
  • Monitor system resources with tools such as iDoctor and Performance Navigator to assure systems meet or exceed performance and availability requirements
  • Represent broad expertise in IBM i OS domain knowledge in technical design and estimating sessions with internal and external IT customers
  • Work with development teams to monitor and track database usage and growth patterns
  • Work closely with application areas to understand their existing needs and future requirements and assist with federated access of data on all the IBM i systems
  • Serve as thought leader and final decision maker able to drive team to conclusions regarding complex technical solutions
  • Responsible for understanding and applying the science and art of monitoring, analyzing and tuning data access and data processing via modern methods, tools and interfaces

Candidate Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of senior level experience with IBM i, iSeries, or AS/400
  • Expert knowledge of IBM i operating system and related products
  • Expert knowledge in analysis, design and troubleshooting of system and application performance
  • Strong knowledge of multiple LPAR and servers maintenance and patch process
  • Strong understanding of logical and disk based replication technologies
  • Working knowledge of iDoctor, Performance Navigator and other IBM i analysis tools

  • Exceptional communication skills with ability to communicate complex information in an organized and concise manner
  • Previous leadership responsibility or experience
  • Ability to see the bigger picture and understand the engineering and/or development process from ideation through execution
