ABOUT THIS POSITION

Ensures stable telecommunication/data network operation. Researches, designs, tests, evaluates and recommends changes in telecommunication and data network systems to further increase efficiency and security.  Maintains a high level of expertise in telecommunication design.  Provides project management as needed to meet assigned tasks.

 

 

SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES:

1. Researches, tests and evaluates and monitors communication network systems.  Monitors network performance to ensure efficiency.

2. Analyzes network workload, including traffic and utilization trends. 

3. Interfaces with users, consultants, technical teams, and vendors to determine the most appropriate type of set up and hardware installation for LAN and WAN networks throughout the organization.

4. Protects company assets through effective set up, management and security of access to network systems.

5. Ensures availability of network services for main site and all remote sites.

6. Installs and upgrades network equipment software as needed.

7. Patches, documents and maintains the physical aspects of connectivity for network devices.

8. Assists in security management of all network devices.

9. Creates and maintains support documents.

10. Trains and mentors Junior level network team members. Provides technical expertise to management and users.

11. Actively participates in disaster recovery planning, documentation and testing.

12. Actively monitors data center to ensure business uptime of critical services.

13. Responsible for the best practice design of network topologies to ensure uptime of critical services.

14. Spec out new network hardware to ensure appropriate performance for the company network.

15. Responsible for network cabling needs for all sites within the company.

16. Responsible for WAN circuits for main site and remote site connectivity to the company network and Internet.

17. Responsible for troubleshooting any network problem, including WAN technologies, LAN technologies, Internet technologies, etc.

18. Responsible for staying current on new technologies to ensure company network uptime.

19. Responsible for the performance of the network and ensuring optimal performance for the users.

20.Responsible for the wireless networks of the company.  This includes configuration and monitoring of all wireless network equipment.

21. Responsible for other devices in the network that the network interacts with, including Cisco ISE, Solarwinds, Cisco Prime, etc.

22. Responsible for configuration and the stability of network technologies that the company uses, including HSRP, BGP, OSPF, etc.

23. Responsible for Cisco Catalyst network gear for campus networking.

24. Responsible for Cisco Nexus network gear for data center networking.

25. Participates in the design of newer technologies where the network supports Voice and Data related services.

26. Actively checks data center components weekly to ensure uptime of all physical, non-monitored devices.

27. Acts in the capacity of project leader as needed on large projects to plan, execute projects steps to ensure timely completion.

28. Performs all other duties as assigned.

29. Must have regular predictable attendance.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND/OR SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Bachelor of Computer Science degree, equivalent experience or other certification.

2. Minimum of ten (10) years of LAN/WAN experience. Technical and working understanding of campus and data center technologies.  Experience working with Cisco network hardware required. 

3. Knowledge of Cisco network operating systems.  Experience with LAN / WAN networking.  Cisco certification preferred.  Familiarity with various network monitoring products (Solarwinds, Prime, etc.).  Familiarity with multiple LAN protocols such as OSPF, BGP, HSPR, etc. Familiarity with the security configurations including network access-lists, router/switch configurations, L2 and L3 technologies, etc. Familiarity with advanced IP routing techniques desired.
