Sr. Security Engineer

Virginia Beach, VA

Contract-to-hire

7-10 years of experience

CISSP certification 

The Security Engineer will manage the day-to-day security of all systems and networks and is ultimately responsible for enforcing principles of information, data, system and network security. This person will design and implement multi-level security practices to reinforce internal network security and perimeter protection, by analyzing security events, developing mitigation plans, administering litigation holds, handling copyright infringement notices and initiating implementation strategies. Essential duties include:

  • Provide risk assessment to all ongoing and future projects to impede undesirable exposure
  • Assess vulnerability within the environment and develop mitigation plans
  • Promote implementation strategies to remedy identified security risks
  • Analyze day-to-day security events and develop appropriate reports and/or courses of action
  • Manage SOC as a service
  • Develop and maintain university-wide security policies and procedures 
  • Conduct configuration audits on all university systems and services to verify adherence to security policies and architecture, working with responsible parties to resolve any potential security violations
  • Build and deploy new security systems and services based on security policies and architecture designs
  • Ensure all disaster recovery procedures emphasize system availability
  • Maintain security systems, including firewalls, VPNs, web content and SPAM filtering 
  • Administrate all litigation holds and copyright infringement requirements throughout the University
  • Act as IT liaison and member of the Emergency Preparedness Committee

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Information Security, Engineering or Computer Science or related experience and certifications required
  • Minimum of 5+ years demonstrated technical experience and strong aptitude for network security
  • Experience in maintaining, configuring and supporting industry standard firewalls, VPNs, IDSs, and other security affiliated hardware/software within a high availability network infrastructure
  • In-depth knowledge of the TCP/IP protocol stack and practical application of the OSI model, including packet headers, and traffic flow
  • In depth experience with UNIX/Linux and Windows 2008/2012/Win 7 operating system environments, including ecommon UNIX/Linux services and system administration functions, ranging from shell sessions to specific services such as Sendmail, Apache, X windows, and user/group administration
  • Experience troubleshooting TCP/IP data flows, connectivity and firewall problems, as well as experience in firewall rule set decision and policy management
  • Knowledge of common probing and attack methods, network/service discovery, system auditing, viruses, malware, adware and worms, and an understanding of email headers, spam handling, and attack handling
  • In depth knowledge of LAN administration, ethernet switching and cabling, with a working knowledge of routing protocols including OSPF, RIP, ISIS, and BGP
  • Encryption experience with SSH, VPN, PGP, PKI, and other encryption and authentication technologies
  • Network management systems experience with SNMP, syslog, and performance monitoring tools
  • Custom scripting capability is highly desirable
  • Experience in large corporate technical environment is required and experience with developing and deploying system architecture based on established requirements desired
