Apex Systems is seeking a Technical Writer supporting the Combat Terrain Information System’s Instrument Set, Reconnaissance and Surveying Capabilities effort. Commonly known as ‘ENFIRE'


  • The candidate will be responsible for the preparation, review and revision of ENFIRE technical documents for software and systems engineering, system operation and user documentation.
  • The Technical Writer will develop information and present it in a form and at a level suitable for the target Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) audience. Current documentation will also require update to comply with military standards, exporting/converting them into PDF, HTML5, and XML formats.
  • The Technical Writer will work in close coordination between the software developers and the ENFIRE training team to develop content that accurately reflects the capabilities, theory of operation and technical parameters of the equipment and software and will develop new content and update existing technical data to include the Software User’s Manual (SUM), Technical Manual (TM), and other technical documentation as required. The preferred candidate will ensure that the currency of the documentation keeps pace with software releases and that all documentation reflects the current hardware configuration.
  • The candidate must be capable of understanding and clearly conveying technical information without sacrificing thoroughness and accuracy in order to develop instructions for ENFIRE troubleshooting, maintenance and operating procedures.
  • Typical work assignments involve: (1) obtaining, analyzing, and selecting the pertinent information; (2) determining a logical and effective sequence for the narrative; (3) determining the appropriate length and content based on the objectives, the medium, and the audience; (4) writing the material; (5) consulting on or selecting illustrative material; and (6) preparing the material for publication.
  • The candidate should have good interpersonal skills, a background in technical writing, and experience with technical documentation and formatting.
  • Basic Requirements: • Contract GLC requirement: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and 3+ years of general experience. Four years of additional general experience may be substituted for BS/BA. • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent military training and experience (4 years) as well as a minimum of 1+ year relevant skills experience. 
  • Experience as a technical writer for hardware and/or software documentation for government customers. • Excellent writing, grammar, proofreading, editing and oral communication skills.
  • Minimum Secret clearance required. Preferred Requirements:
  • Experience with military standardized formatting requirements, specifically MIL-STD-40051-2C and MIL-HDBK-1222Fv12 documents and their respective work packages/style sheets.
  • Experience with XML creation utilizing OxygenXML (or any desired XML editor) for XML format development of SUM and TM. • Experience with Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat Pro for SUM and TM development. • Experience with Adobe Framemaker for HTML5 generation of SUM.
  • Experience in graphical design for editing of images.
